Glutton Gut's Feast

Big Food Industry

Scary Fact

Big Tobacco companies once owned Kraft-General Foods and Nabisco. Their formula for designing products to be addictive and strategies for marketing them to children crossed over into Big Food.

What can you do?

  • Avoid ultra-processed food which are high in sugar, fat, salt, additives, preservatives, and high fructose corn syrup.

  • Check labels: stick to foods with recognizable ingredients (names that you can pronounce!)

  • Eat whole foods, fruits, and veggies

  • Go plant based! Take meat and dairy out of your diet.

  • Food deserts are where there is a lack of access to healthy foods, fresh fruits, and vegetables. Food deserts are placed in low-income communities and disproportionately affect people of color.

  • Ultra-processed foods (packaged snacks, sweetened drinks, fast food, frozen meals, breakfast cereals, processed meats, pre-packaged desserts, etc.) have been linked to health risks, including cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and obesity.

  • Big Food companies engineer hyperpalatable foods (high in fat, sugar, sodium, carbs, artificial colors, and chemical additives) which trigger the reward center of the brain, creating an addictive product.

  • Marketing a highly processed, unhealthy, CHEAP food to consumers, which can also be addictive, increases their profits.
